Session 11: NUCLEAR ENERGY
Facing climate change caused by warm house gas, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), China and US made a bilateral agreement setting targets for CO2 emission out to the year 2030 on 17 Nov 2014. In order to achieve this target, the energy industry from both countries needs to develop and maintain alternative energy solutions to meet continuous growing demands, not only in technology and engineering, but also social and economic reform.
Nuclear energy, as a vital energy source, will play an important role during the changing process. According the World Nuclear Association's (WNA) statistics, US is the country having the most nuclear reactors in operation, and China is the one having the biggest new build programme, nearly the half of total global new builds. Back to the Europe, although there are a few countries have new build programmes, it is steady and not substantial. UK, as one of global leading countries in nuclear development, has its first commercial nuclear reactor in operation in 1955. Currently, the new build programme in Hinkley Point C in Southwest of England is attracting global's attention, not just because of the scale and complexity of the project, but also driven by the engineering challenges. As a nation like most of European countries having nuclear energy, Great Britain is also facing challenges from lifetime extension and decommissioning.
Therefore, it is vital for global nuclear industry to systematically and strategically to think about the development of nuclear energy.
In this session, global engineering expertise, business leaders and policy makers are called to contribute discussions on:
• How to build a new nuclear power station for long term operations?
• How to develop and maintain the lifetime of a nuclear power plant after 60 years operation?
• How to plan a decommissioning ahead of the reactor shut-down?
• How does global nuclear industry and supply chain work together to face the challenges in next decade?
• Safe use of radioactive materials for beneficial civilian purposes while protecting people and the environment.
• Latest developments on safe and secure management of radioactive wastes.
