Session 07: ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT

The session will address the development of energy technologies and their implications for the environment we live in. The environmental issues addressed will cover both the natural and the built environment, including buildings and urban spaces and may be related to greenhouse gas emission, water consumption and land footprint.

The energy technologies covered in this session span both energy generation and energy demand /efficiency areas. Examples of energy generation related issues include the impact of energy storage, carbon capture and storage , wind and marine energy, as well as nuclear waste . On the demand side, the recent energy efficiency drives have led to unforeseen and unintended consequences including overheating of indoor spaces in highly insulated buildings and indoor air quality issues.

This session will also include topics related to methodologies and tools for assessment of both conventional and non-conventional energy systems in terms of their economic viability and environmental impacts. These assessments could be used by the decision makers (e.g. government and industry) for making better energy choice.

It is vital that energy technology development will also lead to environments in which human beings live and work healthily and productively, and our eco systems thrive. This session is a forum facilitating and encouraging such discussions and debates. The above examples are intended to be illustrations rather than definitive themes and we welcome papers in all areas that contribute to the preservation and enhancement of our natural and built environments.
